Ten Dumb Things Christian Couples Believe

1. Love conquers all. Most dating couples follow a predictable romantic trajectory. They meet, hang out, develop attraction, begin dating, experience passion, fall in love, and start thinking about marriage. Often, they never meet each other’s parents, or they’ve only met under the best of circumstances, like a holiday visit to his or her family. This is spiritually and relationally dangerous on many levels.

I prefer the old adage, “Fail to plan, plan to fail,” and have used it descriptively many times in my writings because it says it all so simply. As applied to dating and marriage, it could be called the lack of “due-diligence dating/marriage.”

As the reader likely knows, I’m a deliverance minister. It’s my calling and spiritual specialty. One thing anyone quickly learns when they are involved in praying for those spiritually tormented is this: Most demonic bondage is generational; it is learned in the birth home and/or is inherited from the bloodlines of both parents. That’s why it is critical to know as much as possible about the spiritual background of the person who is being considered as a potential mate.

If you discover that the love of your life has a lot of demonic baggage, it’s not a deal-killer. But you don’t want to go forward until those matters have been adequately addressed. That may involve considerable time spent with inner healing and possibly exorcism.

What questions should you ask of someone you’re falling in love with? It’s probably best to seek help from someone such as me, or a deliverance ministry we can recommend. But for starters you want to know these basic things about your beloved:

Has anyone in the family been involved in witchcraft or New Age practices? If so, what specific forms of divination did they engage in? All such occult alliances need to be renounced and any curses broken which are related to these indulgences. Perhaps your romantic partner has received some deliverance. Find out how much and what it entailed. Not all those who claim to cast out demons are credible, and sometimes the cure is worse than the cause.

What kinds of illegal or immoral activities have taken place in the extended family structure? To the uninformed, what I’m about to say may sound extreme, but I’ve known of many naïve men and women who’ve unknowingly married into a family where incest and sexual abuse is rife. Others find out after marriage that one or more family members is addicted to alcohol or drugs or has engaged in criminal activity. These issues can be resolved if you know in advance. But these are not skeletons you want protruding from a closet after you’ve embarked on marital bliss.

Does your future marriage partner have any personal addictions to alcohol, drugs, or pornography? What steps at rehabilitation have been taken? How severe is the addiction? If you’re uncomfortable asking these questions, that’s a red flag by itself. At least be certain that a pastor or qualified spiritual counselor has asked those questions.
